Dear Families,
Summer is here, and with it comes our Summer Reading Program! It is so
important for students to continue reading through the summer months. We
encourage your child to read at least 15 minutes every day.
Your child should have received a reading log to keep track of his/her summer
reading, or the log can be downloaded from OSD’s website. Prizes will be given
according to the number of hours spent reading. At 5 hours, the prizes are a
pencil and bookmark. At 10 hours, it’s a key ring flashlight. At 15 hours, the
prize is a drawstring backpack plus one ticket entered into a drawing. After 15
hours, the student will earn one ticket for each additional hour spent reading.
The prizes for the kindergarten through fifth grade drawing include one bicycle
and one scooter; for grades 6-12 there is one iPod Touch
(generously donated by AMT Group). Additional drawing prizes include a bookmark
timer, book light, backpack, blanket, and t-shirt.
Your child may read books, newspapers, or magazines. Books with accompanying
videos in sign language would also count as reading minutes. There are also
some options for “Bonus Activities” your child may complete. These include
having a public library card (provide a copy or bring the card to the school
library), reading one or more of the Buckeye Teen Book Award nominated books,
completing a book review and/or character scrapbook page, creating a
“bookprint” on-line, and reading to a younger child. Each bonus activity
completed will earn one ticket for the prize drawing. Please contact Nancy
Boone or Donna Henderson if you have ideas for additional bonus activities.
Reading logs, including the signed Verification Page, are due in the
school library no later than August 29, 2011. Prizes will be awarded on August
30 to students enrolled at the Ohio School for the Deaf for the 2011-12 school
year.
If you have any questions about the Summer Reading Program, please feel free to
contact us in the library. Happy reading!
