Interpreting for Students with Cochlear Implants

Complete a brief survey on the training and supports you need
from ISLR to interpret effectively for students with CIs!

Students with cochlear implants (CIs) are not new arrivals to the mainstream classroom, but there are few resources on best practices for interpreting for these students. To respond to this need, ISLR hosted an online seminar in spring of 2009 entitled “Exploring Interpreting Strategies for Students with Cochlear Implants: A Community of Practice.”  In this seminar, we began a discussion with K-12 interpreters who are currently working with students with CIs, asking them to share experiences, resources and perspectives. This discussion was continued with additional participants at Summer Institute 2009 in a session called “Building Our Knowledge Base.”

On this webpage, we are sharing the fruits of this labor and additional resources on interpreting for students with cochlear implants as we become aware of them:
  • Wiki document created by participants in the online seminar "Exploring Interpreting Strategies for Students with Cochlear Implants: A Community of Practice" from spring 2009 to chronicle their discussions, including resources reviewed by participants.
  • Recording of a live discussion conducted over the internet withparticipants from the 2009 online seminar. The recording is about two hours long and best viewed in Internet Explorer.
  • Young, Barbara. "Interpreting for the Student with a Cochlear Implant." Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Views 26 (2009): 20-22.
Additional resources will be added, including resources shared in the online seminar and notes from the discussion held at Summer Institute 2009.

Many thanks to the online seminar and SI participants whose hard work began building our collective knowledge of best practices for this growing segment of consumers!
