High School Extreme Adventures in Independence
Independent living PictureHigh School Extreme Adventures in Independence
Sunday, August 3 through Friday, August 8, 2008

Parents, do you get a lot of comments from your 15-21 year old stating "I'm ready for the real world"? Do you worry that your teen is not quite ready for independence? Does your student function several grades below his/her peers academicallybut has the potential to develop a strong range of work skills? If this sounds like your teen, we have a training experience that is perfect for them! Extreme Adventures in Independence is a week long independence immersion program for students who have language or cognitive delays. Students will spend a week learning to prepare meals, traveling into the community for project based work experiences, and learning to live in a group living situation. Small groups of 6 to 7 students will work alongside a teacher to prepare a menu with a budget, go shopping for food and learn the value of coupons, cook simple dinners for each other and learn to budget spending money for community based activities such as going to a captioned movie, swimming, and ordering food at a restaurant. At the end of the week, students will present what they have learned to parents and community members during an informal "show and tell" demonstration in the school's cafeteria.Parents should send a copy of the student's IEP with the application.
Camp Accommodations: Students will stay in fan-cooled dormitories and eat in the cafeteria. Dormitories are supervised by experienced youth leaders following established expectations for student care. Students will have access to TTY and video-phone service and captioned television. Students should be prepared to cooperate with others, take care of their own things, and use safety and appropriate decision making in career areas.

OSD's camps are supported by a grant from the Ohio Department of Education and by the Ohio School for the Deaf.

Registration: The registration fee needs to accompany the student's application form. (Registration fees may be waived for families who can document living within the poverty range guidelines.)

Application deadline: May 9, 2008 (download application)

Registration fee: $25.00

There are no other fees for this camp.

Deadlines for registration cannot be extended so that we will have enough time to hire sufficient staff for all students, arrange for accommodations that might be necessary, and communicate details to families.

Parents may print off a blank application from the website, fill it out, and send it along with the registration fee to:
