What is the purpose of a Family Learning Experience (FLE)?
The Family Learning Experience is a unique way for families, deaf and hearing with a young deaf or hard of hearing child to learn about deafness, share their experiences with other families, learn about resources, and gain new skills in a warm, caring atmosphere.
Who can attend a Family Learning Experience?
Any Ohio family with a deaf or hard of hearing child can attend a Family Learning Experience.
Can I bring my other children (deaf or hearing), extended family members, our babysitter, etc.?
Yes, you may bring anyone else in your family, children or adults, as well as those who interact with your child often. Children and siblings, deaf and hearing, participate in fun and educational activities, and are cared for by experienced and qualified deaf and hearing staff. All adults participate in family-focused workshops.
For my family to attend, does my child have to be enrolled at OSD?
FLW is open to families throughout Ohio, who’s deaf or hard of hearing child attends any school, public, private, as well as those who attend OSD.
When are the FLEs?
We have three FLEs every year, each focusing on a different age group.
Fall—families with deaf or hard of hearing children ages birth to 3 years.
Spring—families with deaf or hard of hearing children ages 3-5 years.
Summer—families with deaf or hard of hearing children in kindergarten through 6th grade.
Where are FLEs held?
Traditionally, they have held at OSD, where families have the option of staying in the dorms on campus or staying in a nearby Columbus hotel. However, we are open to the possibility of other locations outside the Columbus area.
How must does it cost to attend FLE?
NOTHING!
